Petrol Price Up 643 Percent Since Subsidy Removal, Data Shows
New data shows the price of petrol in Nigeria has surged from ₦175 per litre in May 2023, shortly before President Tinubu removed the fuel subsidy, to roughly ₦1,300 per litre by May 2026, a 643 percent increase over three years. The scale of the rise has driven up transport fares and the cost of goods nationwide, since fuel prices feed directly into the cost of moving people and produce across the country. Opposition parties have repeatedly pointed to the figure as evidence that the human cost of subsidy removal has fallen hardest on Nigerians who can least afford it.
