Naira's Slide Leaves Minimum Wage Worth Less Than Half Its 2019 Value
Nigeria's national minimum wage of ₦70,000 now converts to roughly $42 a month at prevailing exchange rates, compared with about $83 that the previous ₦30,000 minimum wage was worth in 2019, according to recent economic analysis. The gap illustrates how currency depreciation under the current administration has eroded real wages even where nominal pay has risen. Housing and food alone now account for more than half of most household budgets nationwide, and while headline inflation has eased from its peak, food inflation has stayed close to 20 percent, keeping pressure on the households least able to absorb it.
